Annual Governance Statement for the Governing Body of

St Peter’s C of E (V.C.) Primary School, Sible Hedingham

July 2016

In accordance with the Government’s requirement for all governing bodies, the 3 core strategic functions of the St Peter’s C of E (V.C.) Primary School Governing Body are:

1.    Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

2.            Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its Pupils;

3.            Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Governance arrangements

  • The Governing Body of St Peter’s C of E (V.C.) Primary School is now made up of 2 Staff Governors (including the Headteacher), 4 elected Parent Governors, 1 Authority Governor, 3 Foundation Governors and 4 Co-opted Governors. Co-opted Governors are appointed by the Governing Body and are people who, in the opinion of the Governing Body, have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.
  • Mr Colin Foster, a longstanding Governor, left the Governing Body at the end of the Summer Term 2015. He kindly agreed to remain as an Associate Member.
  • Mr Ron Volkwyn, Mr Nick Hancock and Mrs Nicola Seaman left the Governing Body during this academic year.
  • A new Chair of Governors was appointed, Mr Martin Lee.
  • Mrs Clair Page and Mrs Sue Craig joined the Governing Body during this academic year.
  • The full Governing Body meets at least once each term, and we also have a number of Committees to consider different aspects of the school in detail. At St Peter’s Primary School we have a Finance & Personnel Committee, a Premises Committee, a Curriculum & Pupil Related Committee, and a Pay and Performance Committee. We also have Committees that meet if required to consider pupil discipline and staffing matters.
See below for a list of Governors.

  • Attendance record of governors

  • Governors have excellent attendance at meetings and we have never cancelled a meeting because it was not “quorate” (the number of Governors needed to ensure that legal decisions can be made).

See below for details of individual Governors’ attendance at meetings.

The work that we have done on our committees and in the governing body

  • The Governing Body has undergone significant changes due to Governors leaving after their terms have finished and new Governors joining to replace them. A new Chair of Governors was appointed to work alongside the new Headteacher.
  • Meeting structures and some timing changed, with a new smarter way of working developed. Governors were encouraged and empowered through the individual committees to monitor and question when necessary their individual areas of the School.
  • Greater clarity and evidence of progress and across the whole School has increased.
  • The Governors closely scrutinise the impact of the Pupil Premium and challenge when appropriate.
  • Governors are encouraged to visit and be part of the wider school life.
  • A Governor readily gave up a week of his time to accompany the schools extended school trip.
  • Our Training Link Governor has encouraged the up skilling of all Governors and all have completed their Induction Training and the majority completed their Safeguarding Training.
  • All Governors take their role seriously and are unified in increasing the quality of education for all at St Peter’s Primary School and their work through the Committees and Governing Body as a whole to fulfil their role as critical friends of the School and to make sure standards are constantly and consistently improved.

Future plans for the governors

  • To increase the recruitment of suitable Governors to support the School.
  • To continue to support and monitor the School as it drives up the standard of education for all the pupils and prepare the School for its anticipated Ofsted Inspection.

How you can contact the Governing Body

We always welcome suggestions, feedback and ideas from parents – please contact the Chair of Governors, Mr Martin Lee, via the school office, or the Clerk to the Governing Body – glynishaigh@hotmail.com
