Physical Education
Our ASPIRE P.E. curriculum enables our children to develop effective physical skills in order to participate, compete and lead a healthy lifestyle.
Our P.E. subject leader is Mr Eynon.
At St Peter’s, we take a child’s entitlement to high-quality, inclusive and engaging P.E. seriously.
The national curriculum states that:
A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
Our Aspire P.E. curriculum:
At St Peter’s, we are proud of the high-quality P.E. curriculum, resources and the grounds that we provide, as well as the competitive opportunities and sports clubs that we offer. We have our own fully equipped outdoor gym area that is used daily as well as a spacious sports field and two playgrounds.
Our St Peter’s ASPIRE P.E. curriculum is designed to enable all children to discover a love of movement, physical activity and sport, despite their starting point, previous experiences or ability. Many studies have shown falling activity levels in children and a drop in pupils choosing to study P.E. at GCSE. Early data also suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 also led to a drop in activity levels. Through our high-quality P.E. provision, we encourage our children to lead a healthy, fulfilled and active lifestyle. We are also very aware of the correlation between physical well-being and mental well-being, and this learning is linked regularly to our PSHE curriculum.
Aspire P.E. Curriculum Intent:
A: Our P.E. curriculum enables all children to see the power and potential of their own bodies. We introduce our learners to a range of interesting (traditional and non-traditional), engaging, competitive and non-competitive physical activities with the aim of enabling all children to have the opportunity to develop a love and interest in a sport. Children are introduced to a variety of successful sporting role models, encouraging them to aim high and persevere in their sporting journey.
S: Children understand that in order to develop sport-specific skills, they must first start with developing the basic movement skills, such as balance, coordination and agility. These skills are then progressively built upon in a sequential way as the children start to apply this prior learning to sport-specific activities and skills.
P: Our P.E. curriculum exposes our learners to a variety of sporting activities, such as cheerleading, tag rugby, dodgeball, sports hall athletics and more traditional games such as netball, hockey and football. We hope that children will develop a passion for healthy habits and a curiosity for a specific sport or activity.
I: Our P.E. provision at St Peter’s encourages children to push their limits, challenge themselves and show them their full potential. Children take part in independent activities, such as Athletics and team games such as Tag Rugby. Children are taught how to swim 25 metres independently and other important life skills.
R: Our P.E. curriculum teaches the values of respect, fair play and sportsmanship. Our children understand how to be competitive in a way that brings the best out of both themselves, their teammates and their opponent. P.E. is taught in a way that includes all children, regardless of their starting point, physical limitations or previous experience of P.E.
E: Taking part in high-quality P.E develops children’s essential communication and social skills. Children learn both verbal and non-verbal communication skills and are taught how to work and participate in effective teams and groups. Reading is developed and encouraged through children following crib sheets and analysing their own and others’ performances.
